Summary
The shofar is an animal’s horn that is blown on special Jewish occasions. It was earlier blown as a call to prepare for battle or to gather for coronations, and it is used today during the Jewish High Holy Days services, Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Perhaps surprisingly, Christians are the largest purchasers of shofars. Hoffman will describe which animals’ horns are allowable, and he will illustrate the different resonant sounds of his blown shofars.

11 am Program Name of Speaker: Bob Wirz Affiliation: Vast Involvement at different levels Major League Baseball (PR and Marketing) Title of Talk: "Experiences in Major League Baseball" About The Speaker A native Nebraskan, Bob Wirz has been a media specialist in the world of sports for about 60 years, with heavy concentration on professional baseball. One of Wirz’s more intriguing tasks was running Major League Baseball’s media office as chief spokesman for Commissioners Bowie Kuhn and Peter Ueberroth for more than a decade (1974-85). His duties included handling pressevents for the commissioners and coordinating media activities for the annual All-Star Game, World Series and Winter Meetings. He started Wirz & Associates, Inc., a sports public relations and consulting company later in 1985. It handled publicity for the prestigious Rolaids Relief Man awards for more than two decades, developed Little League Baseball’s first national sponsorship program and utilized sports celebrities and venues to establish broad awareness campaigns for the industry hair-coloring giant Just For Men. National clients also have included Major League Baseball, IBM and Baseball America magazine. From 2003-2014, he wrote a weekly column, the Independent Baseball Insider. It was unique in that it detailed news from every professional Independent baseball league in a very upbeat manner. Bob’s experience includes six years as publicity director for the Kansas City Royals (1969-74), and a background in newspaper, radio and television work. He worked for The Lincoln (NE) Journal, Wichita (KS) Eagle and The Denver Post. His first professional baseball position was as Public Relations Director of the Triple-A Denver Bears in 1967-68. He published his first book, "The Passion of Baseball", which covers much of his experience in the sport as well as his business life. It came out in 2016. Bob was proudly inducted into the Nebraska Baseball Hall of Fame a short time later. His second book came out in late November of 2022. It is called "My Nebraska", and is all about his continuing fond memories of growing up in a small town in mid-Nebraska in the 1940s and 1950s. Wirz is a graduate of the University of Nebraska, a proud supporter of the school's Department of Mass Communications, and an avid follower of anything in the Husker world as well in his native state. When not watching a Huskers event he often is found on the golf course or watching a baseball game or a theatrical production involving his grandchildren. Bob and his wife Maybeth reside in Wilton, CT. Between them, they have four children and five grandchildren. |
